Developing Genuine Relationships: Partnership in Mental and Behavioral Health

We will discuss best practices for addressing mental health concerns, recognizing mental health symptoms, first responses and how to set up a plan to move forward.

We'll also be discussing how to incorporate Motivational Interviewing into care during difficult, stressful situations and mental health crisis.

Narrative medicine:

“Narrative Medicine fortifies clinical practice with the narrative competence to recognize, absorb, metabolize, interpret, and be moved by the stories of illness. Through narrative training, the Program in Narrative Medicine helps physicians, nurses, social workers, mental health professionals, chaplains, social workers, academics, and all those interested in the intersection between narrative and medicine improve the effectiveness of care by developing these skills with patients and colleagues.”

Presenter: Farji Shaheer – Violence intervention specialist & director of the Next Step Program

Farji is the Violence intervention specialist and director of the Next Step Program, which is a hospital based violence intervention program that is operated out of HCMC and soon to be North Memorial. He has over 11 years’ experience working inside HCMC and over 14yrs inside APS (acute psychiatric services), an emergency crisis center located within HCMC. He has a vast knowledge of historical and present trauma in reflection to communities of indigenous people. He has survived over 30 years inside of hostile areas such as the Robert Taylor Homes and Cabrini Green. He is currently repaying his community by working with at risk youth who have suffered from some from of penetrating trauma.

This annual investment pays for one year membership to MNSCC, including free monthly training sessions.
